How Summer Can Be Hard On Your Kids
Summer’s here so it’s time to celebrate, right? Maybe not if your kids thrive on being out and about or love going to school every day. In fact, summer can be hard on a lot of kids and can bring out behavior that isn’t usually seen during the school year. So if you are worried about your kid’s behavior the next few months, check out our tips to help make things go smoothly.
The Transition
A lot of kids have issues transitioning from getting up and going to school every day to being at home for weeks on end. You can help combat this in several ways. First, try to incorporate some fun activities into your daily routine. Write down what you are going to be doing each day and prepare your child for those activities by reminding them about them and discussing ways you can get ready for them. For example, if you plan on going to the waterpark talk about what you need to do beforehand: have a clean bathing suit, pack towels and put on sunscreen.
No Schedule
Kids tend to thrive on schedules. Even though it may be hard to get them up and at them during the school year, you might actually find that they are even crabbier in the mornings when they get to sleep in. While it’s okay to have less structure in the summer, try to incorporate a schedule into your daily routine. At least make meal times the same as they were before when they were at school and schedule in some free play during the time of day that they had P.E. or were on the playground.
Lack Of Friends
Kids need time to be with their friends. During the summer it might not be possible for them to see their best buds daily due to things like summer camp or family vacations. Try to arrange for time with their friends at least once a week during the summer. If that’s not possible, make sure you provide them with plenty of opportunities to hang out with other kids even if it’s just a trip to the playground or spending some time at the beach.
