The unit consists of a mouth piece with heat resistors and LED light built in, combined with a whitening gel. Each application lasts 8 minutes. The mouth piece design keeps the gel from touching the gums which can cause sensitivity and even discomfort. Clinical studies show your teeth can be up to 5 shades lighter in only 3 to 5 days.  The cost is $275 and gives you enough product for 40 applications.  Additional mouthpieces are available for $79 each and the whitening gel sells in a pack of 10 (again enough for 40 applications,) for $45.
