Growing Easter Basket Grass
We are getting ready to put out Easter baskets together – how about you? Do you make your own Easter grass or do you buy the cheap fake grass? Our cat decided to eat a bunch of the Easter grass last year so we have since banned it from the house. In search of an alternative we found a fun eco-friendly way to make our own Easter grass! The girls really have a great time putting it together and watching it grow!
What you need:
– 1 Seed package of Grass, Rye or Wheat seeds – Wheat berries could also work
– Potting Soil (we prefer an organic brand)
– Plastic for a bottom liner (we use old plastic bags from the grocery store that are laying around or aluminum foil)
– Easter Basket
Ok, lets get started!
Step 1: Line the bottom of the Easter basket with the plastic bag (you may need to cut it open so that it fits the basket properly)
Step 2: Punch a few holes in the plastic or aluminum foil
Step 3: Add several inches of soil to the basket (make sure to leave room and not go to the top because you want your grass to have some support)
Step 4: Sprinkle the seeds sparingly then add a little more soil till the seeds are covered.
Step 5: Leave outside and in the sun but make sure to keep the soil moist. (beware even in the spring the sun is extremely hot. Our grass burned the first time we tried this because the sun was too hot and we forgot to water it)
It takes between 7 to 10 days so make sure you have plenty of time before Easter to make your Easter grass.
