Things to Buy on Sale in September
September is here! Summer may be coming to an end but there are deals to be had.
Now the kids are back in school (or returning after this upcoming weekend, if you live in an area that goes back after Labor Day) and most of the nation is back to wearing real shoes and opening their windows during the day. You might be thinking ahead to shopping for the winter holidays, or you might just be recuperating from checking off all of the items of your kids’ school supply lists! Either way, there are a few things you might find on sale in September:
Summer Clothing
Stores are pulling their summer items off of the shelves to make room for fall and winter wear, so the selection of summer wear is lower than it has been in previous months. Still, you might find good deals on clearance racks at your favorite stores. Labor Day sales will knock prices down even further, so this might be a good time to grab bathing suits and a few sundresses for next year. Big names like Kohls, Macys, REI, Old Navy and many more have lots of deals.
Appliances
Many manufacturers put out their new lines of appliances in the fall, which means that stores need to get rid of washers, dryers and refrigerators from last season. This makes September a great time to get a great deal on home appliances. We had the hardest time finding a new refrigerator when our broke but Home Depot had the best sales and their financing was even better.
Outdoor Equipment
Now that summer is winding to a close, the demand for items like bicycles, grills, Patio Furniture and lawn mowers has gone way down, making it the prime time to buy for next year’s summer season. In many places of the country, you’ll have a month or more of nice weather before you need to pack your new items away for the winter.
Mattresses and Furniture
Labor day mattress sales are available at just about every major store and also furniture. Make sure to check your favorite store app or circular to compare the deals. Also, mattresses only go on sale 2 times a year! Usually, one time during April or May and the other time is over Labor Day!
Electronics
Since it is back to school time you will still find deals on laptops, airpods, and many more electronics.
Fall Produce
One of the best things about fall is the start of the harvest season! Now’s the time to save big on winter squash, apples, pears, blueberries, and corn. Tomato and zucchini season are drawing to a close, but you might still be able to get some on sale in September at farmers’ markets or pick-your-own farms.
There are some things to not count on getting this month, as well: Laptops, televisions and other items that will be popular at Christmastime might be marked up now. If you can wait on these types of items, they’re likely to go on sale closer to Thanksgiving, and certainly for the Black Friday sales.

As a wife-to-be next year, I can’t tell you how wonderfully helpful this guide (and the guide for others months) is. Some of it, like summer clothing, I could have guessed, but certainly surprises remain!
I’m always searching for a bargain and this is certainly a great time of year to look for end of summer clothing sales. I’ve seen bathing suits on sale lately that are cheaper than I could make them for!
I always buy summer clothing this time of the year because it is so cheap!

This is a great article – I have enjoyed reading the monthly series. Most people don’t realize that there are certain months or times of the year to really save on things you need to buy. There have been studies on what we buy and when and it is nice that you are giving us a heads up. I don’t always remember what to buy in September but, thanks to you and your article i now know what I can save money on.

harvest season! Time for winter squash & pumpkins.
My son and his family live in Florida where it is warm year round. It makes it easy for me to buy summer clothes at my clearance prices and send to them.
